Sunshine Community Compost + Community Harvest SRQ

A Strategic Collaboration for Greater Community Impact

For years, Sunshine Community Compost and Community Harvest SRQ have worked independently but in parallel, each strengthening our community's relationship with food, the earth, and one another. We served different needs, engaged different partners, and developed distinct strengths. Yet over time, it became abundantly clear that our missions, values, and community goals were aligned.

Collectively, our organizations:

  • Diverted hundreds of thousands of pounds of food and food scraps from local landfills

  • Educated residents, students, and businesses on sustainable food practices

  • Expanded access to fresh, local food through partnerships with growers and community groups

  • Built volunteer networks committed to environmental stewardship

  • Hosted workshops, events, and programs to deepen community understanding of food systems

  • Fostered collaborations across environmental, agricultural, and social‑impact sectors

  • Advocated for policies to address food insecurity and waste

These accomplishments laid the groundwork for a joint collaboration capable of addressing the full arc of our local food system. The issues within our food system are interconnected, and our solutions must be as well.

By working together, we amplify our impact and ability to respond to the growing challenges facing our region. Together, we can:

  • Address the full cycle of the local food system, from soil health to food access

  • Respond more effectively to rising environmental and food system challenges

  • Reach more neighborhoods, schools, and community partners

  • Leverage shared expertise to create innovative, community‑powered solutions

  • Reduce duplication and increase efficiency

We do this because we envision a future in which:

  • Our food system is resilient in the face of environmental and economic change

  • Healthy soil supports healthy people

  • Every resident has access to fresh, local, nourishing food

  • Food waste is minimized, and composting is a community norm

  • Education empowers people to make sustainable choices

  • Local growers, businesses, and families thrive together

  • Community members feel connected to the land and to one another

We are working to make the local food network not just functional, but regenerative, equitable, and community‑powered. We invite you to join us.
